Last year, the Scholastic Art and Writing Alliance for Young Artists and Writers began an “Alliance Summer Art Program.” Any student who received a GOLD KEY in art or writing and fulfilled a certain income requirement could apply for a variety of summer workshops throughout the country. Several Marian GOLD KEY winners applied this year. It is a very limited program and a very small percentage receive this opportunity. Let us congratulate Stacie Skwarcan '13 who received a GOLD KEY in both writing and art this year and then was awarded this scholarship! She has been invited to attend a creative writing workshop at the University of Iowa during the summer of 2012.

Congratulations to freshman Denise Veldman who earned a National Gold Medal from the Scholastic Art competition for her mixed media felting artwork entitled Sunset. Fewer than 1% of the entire nation receive an award of this magnitude! Marian High School students have earned 14 of these national awards in the last seven years. Last year's winner was Laura Herron and her photograph entitled Unbreakable was selected by the staff of the U.S. Department of Education to be included in a special exhibition of national award winning artwork. Marian Receives a Grade of "A" or "Exemplary" on A.Y.P.
Congratulations are in order as Marian High School received a grade of "A" or an "Exemplary" rating on Adequate Yearly Progress (A.Y.P.) and Public Law 221 from the state of Indiana's Department of Education. Thank you to the students, teachers, and parents for their hard work in earning this distinction. The A.Y.P. measures the Graduation Rate and the percentage of students passing the End of Course Assessments (ECAs) in Algebra I and English 10. Biology ECA scores do not count in terms of A.Y.P., but it is important to note that Marian's Biology test scores were 11 percentage points greater than the next highest school in the area.
